Dental Implants

Dental implants are the best choice when it comes to replacing teeth, and implant placement and recovery are not particularly painful. Most patients compare the process to the common discomfort associated with most dental procedures.

The area is numb before your Berkeley dentist begins work, and typically store-bought pain relievers will see you through recovery—a day or two of swelling and mild tenderness. If store-bought doesn’t do the trick, we encourage you to contact a member of our staff.

Dental implants are tooth root replacements made of durable titanium. Your dentist in Berkeley implants these posts (or a single post) into your jawbone, where it integrates over several months. Soon, your replacement tooth is attached to this post with an abutment, and you have a new smile.

Dental Implants Feel Like Your Natural Teeth

Your dental implants feel like your natural teeth, so having dental implants is not painful. They are so much like natural teeth that you may forget they’re implants!

Simply brush and floss normally, and visit your dentist twice each year for thorough exams and teeth cleanings.

A dental implant is a tooth root replacement made of durable titanium. This material bonds easily with bone, which makes it ideal for root replacement. After the bonding is complete, usually a few months, your dentist places your restoration tooth or dental crown.

Proper Care for Dental Implants

With proper care, your dental implants in Berkeley, CA can last a lifetime.

We recommend:

  • Brushing and flossing twice daily
  • Visiting your dentist regularly for exams and teeth cleanings
  • Checking into a nightguard if you grind and clench your teeth
  • Wearing a mouthguard if you play sports

We make these same recommendations to patients who do not have dental implants!

Common Tooth Restoration Options

Porcelain crowns and veneers are excellent choices for correcting cosmetic flaws like slight tooth misalignments, uneven spaces between teeth, and severe dental staining. A crown encases the whole tooth while a veneer covers the front surface. Both can be customized to address your condition and leave you with a healthier, more refreshed smile.

If you have missing teeth that mar your smile, we offer services like dental implants, porcelain crowns and bridges, and full or partial dentures.

Sometimes for the best results and the most conservative method of saving tooth structure, we may recommend working with orthodontists to help move your teeth in better positioning prior to restorative treatment. Dental teeth whitening may also be a step prior to your final restorations to help achieve the results you desire.

We will be happy to sit down and talk to you about your goals for a more attractive smile. Dr. Au will take all your needs into account and develop a personalized plan for treatment so you can enjoy a smile that exceeds your expectations. As with any medical procedure, healing and recovery times are different for everyone. In general, though, healing can take as little as months or as long as a year.dental implants | general dentistry | berkeley ca

The usual procedure for placing an implant is as follows:

  • Dr. Amy Au performs a thorough evaluation and exam to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants. She uses state-of-the-art cone beam technology (CBCT) to identify anatomical structures and plan the optimal placement of your implant as needed.
  • Next, she places the titanium post in your jaw and allows it to heal. Healing involves a process called osseointegration, where surrounding bone and tissue grow around and accept the biocompatible implant. The time this process takes depends on multiple factors including general health, smoking history, and the quality of surrounding bone.
  • During the healing phase of implant placement, routine visits with Dr. Au will be required to ensure that the dental implant takes in the best possible way.

When considering a procedure like dental implant placement, it’s important for you to have all the facts. If you are thinking about implants and have questions, please call Berkeley Prosthodontics and General Dentistry so we can arrange a convenient consultation.
